Calla Tor has always known her destiny: After graduating from the Mountain School, she'll be the mate of sexy alpha wolf Ren Laroche and fight with him, side by side, ruling their pack and guarding sacred sites for the Keepers. But when she violates her masters' laws by saving a beautiful human boy out for a hike, Calla begins to question her fate, her existence, and the very essence of the world she has known. By following her heart, she might lose everything- including her own life. Is forbidden love worth the ultimate sacrifice? ------
I finished Nightshade by Andrea Cremer and I was impressed by her prose, thoughtfulness to detail and ability to create an emotional vortex in my head... I still can't decide if I love or hate Calla. And people think Bella (Twilight Series) is fickle? This girl goes back and forth between Shay and Ren so quickly it makes MY head spin. On the other hand, it was so well written and engaging that I was hiding the book under the table at dinner, under the covers at night and in the car waiting for the school bus.
I'm in love the way Andrea unfolds the complexities of her characters.. at least some of them.. Calla is not a heroine... she lies to herself and it causes so much tension and mishaps that she should be confined to her room for life. My favorite character is Ren Laroche. You can tell that there is so hidden behind the rough exterior. By the end of the book, I was 100% Team Ren. Oh yeah.
Shay I found to be a hypocrite. He was pushing Calla as much as the people he said were doing the same. This is one instance were I find love at first site to be impossible. Lust on the other hand.....
After I read the reviews for books two and three, and I am conflicted. Something unspeakable to us HEA lovers.. and I can't talk about it because its such a spoiler. But I don't want to read it. It can't be true. I want to stick my head in the sand and pretend it won't happen.
But that would be the coward's way out. No... **throwing shoulders back**.. I will stand up, run to the bookstore and grab book two (Wolfsbane) and three (Bloodrose), plunk down and plow through the misery I know will be there.
Maybe I should invest in Kleenex.
I recommend Nightshade, but I will forewarn you... you may throw the book at the wall. Just a warning.
