She used to think her problems were all in her head.
She couldn’t imagine that after everything she’s been through, the boy she loves would still be keeping secrets.
In this gripping sequel to The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, the truth evolves and choices prove deadly. What will become of Mara Dyer next?
I feel like the girl in The Exorcist. My head is probably about to spin off my body. This series SERIOUSLY messes with your head. I LOVE it. Dark, mesmerizing, twisted and just a little bit south of crazy. Michelle Hodkin writes with incredible depth and deliberation.
We left off with Mara having tried to turn herself in for causing the shooting of her father. She is still haunted by what she thinks is ex-boyfriend. Her DEAD ex-boyfriend. The one she thinks she killed back in Rhode Island. Her family is putting her in outpatient therapy with the hopes they don't have to send her to a permanent facility. Mara's boyfriend Noah is trying to help her solve what is really going on with her, with him and saving Mara from her ex.
You will not be underwhelmed by this novel. This is brain-wracking. It's addictive, perfectly paced and incredibly intense. The romance is real and authentic but not "oh my eyes" sexy. It was just enough.
Noah is struggling with what is happening to Mara and his seeming inability to stop things from happening. His intense anger at himself is heart-wrenching because he so good to her. He grounds her and keeps her from loosing her mind with the insanity of it all. What he does for her in this novel will probably mark him as the Best. Boyfriend. EVER. Make sure you have a tissue box with you while you read. Just a warning.
If you thought the cliff hanger was bad in the first book, you will be blown away with this one. It should have a warning label: DANGER - Steep Cliffhanger. You will probably loose your mind. Enter with extreme caution!
A couple new characters are introduced, including a creepy as hell doll. That thing gave me nightmares. **SHUDDER** The freak out factor is intensifies with the Chucky-like doll, other patients, mysterious items and uninvited visitors while she's sleeping. Completely terrifying but enjoyable none the less.
My one complaint is that we don't get any real answers about Mara's power. What IS it? Where does it come from? How is it connected to Noah's?
I highly recommend this series for all those who enjoy seriously twisted plots, mystery and paranormal abilities. It is not for the faint of heart but it is wicked good!
