Book Review: SHEARWATER by D. S. Murphy

SHEARWATER (Ocean Depths Book One)
BY: D. S. Murphy

Published: January 19, 2016 by Urban Epics

Genres: Mermaids, Fae, Suspense, Murder Mystery, Mystery, Foreign Countries (Ireland), Romance, YA (Young Adult), Family Drama, Paranormal, Fantasy, Mythology, Impending Doom

Rating: 4.6 out of 5 (Rounded to 5)
Shearwater is a young adult mermaid novel that will appeal to lovers of paranormal romance, urban fantasy, witches, Irish mythology, and supernatural folklore.

After her parents die in a car accident, 15-year old Clara Clark is shipped off to live with a grandfather she never knew existed... in Ireland. Once there, she discovers that her mother’s past is filled with secrets. Determined to discover the truth about her mother, a string of strange incidents cause her to question her sanity. As the mystery deepens, she begins going through changes of her own, until she’s not sure just who – or what – she is anymore.

Then she meets the charming Sebastian, who won’t leave her alone, and the brooding Ethan, who can’t stand to be around her. Both of them seem to have supernatural powers, and she’s not quite sure whether they want to kiss her or kill her. When a shocking revelation destroys everything she thought she knew, she's forced to choose... whether to cling to the last of her humanity, or venture into the deep abyss in search of her true identity.

I watched the colored lights and sparkles coming off of Sebastian in the dark water, as the ocean began the process of rebuilding his tail. I longed to join him in the water, to wrap my arms around him and let him carry me under the sea; but I wasn’t ready. For him, the ocean was a home; for me it was death. Without being able to transform, the ocean depths would suffocate me, the pressure collapse my bones and flesh.

Explore the magical coast of Northern Ireland, and a new interpretation of the Tuatha de Danann, the Fomorians, and mermaid mythology.

An innovative paranormal romance with a brand new magical system, and a version of mermaid biology that actually makes sense.

This is PART ONE of the first book (Shearwater), of the Ocean Depths Series.

Here's a teaser for the epic conclusion: Clara is in the middle of a war between two ancient cultures, and she just might be the key to saving humanity from extermination. Can she negotiate a peace before everyone she cares about is murdered? Or will she give up what she wants most, to save the one she loves?

I am a sucker for a pretty cover. You know this. So when I saw the cover of Shearwater, I had to stop and learn more. Then I read the words mermaid, Ireland and paranormal romance. SOLD. You had me at mermaid.

The online reviews don't do the book justice and I'm not sure why. It was fantastic. The characters wrapped me up and absorbed my attention like fifteen year old boys at a PlayStation display with free hamburgers. I was constantly second guessing people and their intentions.

Clara was a bit of a Debbie Downer at first. You couldn't really blame her though. Her parents... dead. Her whole life ripped up and sent in a completely foreign (ha ha) direction. (Sorry, couldn't help myself there.) She was definitely acting like your typical fifteen year old. (No offense out there.) She started off rejecting the changes and the new people in her life. Her grandfather especially. Did I mention the school uniform? Uh, yeah... not her favorite thing.

However, place, people and things aren't what they seem. And our Clara develops rather quickly, learning she needs to not jump to conclusions and assumptions. The adjusting was challenging and she felt so out of place. There were certain people that were openly hostile to her for no reason. Everything around her opened up new questions about her mother and why she left Ireland. Not to mention that she had events happen that would scare the crap out of you. Weird and spooky things.

Clara turns out to be a fighter. She tossed off the "why me" attitude and got down to business. Who am I? Why am I here? What are the connections between these people and my mom? Why did this local girl die? She pulled up her big girl pants and developed beautifully as a main character.

We all have or will face major upheaval in our lives. How we face them is a true test of our character. Clara had to face death, moving, new school, new family, new friends, everything she thought was true and changes in the very DNA of herself. That's a lot to handle.

Good thing she quickly developed friendships. Ethan, Jackie and Derry became anchors in her life, and cohorts in crime as they tried to solve the multiple mysteries surrounding them. Aedan was your typical rough teddy bear grandfather figure. However, he did lend some mystery to the story.

D. S. Murphy grew his characters  with so many layers. He enveloped the reader in detail and descriptions. The suspense and the relationships were both organic

Happy Release Day! New book by Wendy Higgins!

Wendy is one of my ALL TIME favorite authors and she has just released TODAY! UNKNOWN is a brand new series and on sale NOW!

Amber Tate believes the worst thing she'll suffer in life is dealing with the unrequited love she feels for her brother's best friend, Rylen Fite. She also believes war is something unfortunate that happens places far, far away from her rural Nevada town. She's wrong on both counts.

When an unknown organization meticulously bombs major cities in the United States and across the globe, a trickle-down effect spreads to remaining towns at an alarming speed-everything from food and water sources to technology and communications are compromised. Without leadership, the nation is split between paralysis and panic, but Amber isn't one to hide or watch helplessly. She's determined to put her nursing skills to use, despite the danger, even if it means working alongside the man she can never have.

FULL BOOK REVIEW: Shades of Truth by C.L. Stockton

Shades of Truth (Shades of Truth Book #1)
By: C.L. Stockton

Published: April 13, 2013 Kindle Edition
Genres: YA • NA • Mystery • Romance • World Building • Suspense • Kings & Swords • Humor

A semi finalist in the 2011 Amazon Breaththrough Novel Awards for young adults, "Shades of Truth" is a novel about the power of truth and who tells it.

After nearly being kidnapped in a bakery, Cadrian Summerlynn decides the next time her father hands her a purse and tells her to take it to Lisbon, the answer is no. Emphasis on the no. If there even is a next time, as her father's disappeared and all his scary associates seem to think she has what he promised them. And she might, only she isn't entirely sure.

She might be able to tell if only Lucas Colton didn't keep distracting her. Too handsome for his own good, he has definite ideas about her father and where Cadrian fits in.

Forced to work together with neither telling the complete truth, will they discover her father's secrets without killing the other?

Breaking out the minions.... oh yeah. It was THAT. GOOD.

Grab your blanket, cup of tea (or coffee) and a big box of tissues and get settled in because once you start reading Shades of Truth, you won't be bothered by anything other than the roof on fire.

Yes, it was that tremendous. My favorite aspect of this book? The WIT.

Oh Holy Mac and Cheese... the dialogue was outstanding. OUTSTANDING. Stockton writing was a mountainous lava cake, overflowing with rich, finger licking good verbal sparing matches that made me laugh, pump fist the air and cry. She delivered a five star dining experience full of dynamic dialogue, evolving characters, gut wrenching twists, polished storylines and all consuming emotional pull.

Lucas is now my new book boyfriend. Just letting you all know that HE. IS. MINE. Oh Buttercream on a Cupcake was he a delicious read. He is one character that has as many layers as an onion but the taste of a BJ's Brewhouse Strawberry Beignet. Oooooooh yeah.

My one minor critique would be the world building. I felt that there should have been a bit more description to ground the reader as to the time period, social parameters and technology level.

Cadrian and Lucas were bewitching. I was held captive by their personalties, their dialogue and their emotions. The book immediately threw you into the heart of the action and catapulted me deep into the heart of the characters. My mind was working the whole time, sifting through clues and second guessing possible options.

The relationships were organic and fresh. They weren't forced. She didn't wrangle characters into situations that weren't fitting with the storyline or their personality. Stockton created effortless flow and pacing.

Stockton brewed a masterful blend to ensare my mind and heart. Bravo!

I have grab hands for the next book in the series!

New Books!

Here are some fantastic books out now!

Happy Release Day Wendy Higgins!

The Great Hunt
By: Wendy Higgins

Wendy Higgins, the author of the New York Times bestselling Sweet Evil series, reimagines a classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale with The Great Hunt, a dramatic, romance-filled fantasy with rugged hunters, romantic tension, and a princess willing to risk all to save her kingdom.

When a monstrous beast attacks in Eurona, desperate measures must be taken. The king sends a proclamation to the best and bravest hunters: whoever kills the creature will win the hand of his daughter Princess Aerity as a reward. The princess recognizes her duty but cannot bear the idea of marrying a stranger—she was meant to marry for love—until a brooding local hunter, Paxton Seabolt, catches her attention. And while there’s no denying the fiery chemistry between them, Princess Aerity feels that Paxton’s mysteriousness is foreboding, maybe even dangerous.

Paxton is not the marrying type. Nor does he care much for spoiled royals and their arcane laws. He is determined to keep his focus on the task at hand—ridding the kingdom of the beast—but the princess continues to surprise him, and the secrets he’s buried begin to surface against his wishes.
